The four common illnesses on cruise ships that experts want you to know about

A deadly outbreak of suspectedhantaviruson aDutch cruise shipoff the coast of West Africa this month has raised concerns aboutdisease spreadduring thesummer travel season.

The Independent US

Three passengers have died and three others are receiving medical care - although health officials have only confirmed three hantavirus cases so far, according to shipownerOceanwide Expeditions. The ship, known as theMV Hondius, has 17 Americans on board, includingBoston travel blogger Jake Rosmarin.

While taking a cruise is generally safe, experts say this case shows again just how easy it is for passengers to spread disease-carrying germs - especially on larger cruises containing thousands of passengers.

“They are essentially dense, semi-closed ecosystems where thousands of people share space, food, air and surfaces over multiple days,” virologist Raymond Alvarez toldThe New York Post.

And hantavirus isn’t the most common illness passengers should be aware of this season.

Norovirus

Noroviruswas the source of most of the past year’s cruise outbreaks, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention'sVessel Sanitation Programshows.

The highly contagious vomiting disease was responsible for one of this year’s three outbreaks and 18 of last year’s outbreaks, leading to the highest number of outbreaks tied to U.S. ports in 12 years.

Infection can lead to vomiting and diarrhea that can cause dehydration and even death, although most people get better after drinking fluids and resting for a couple of days.

Norovirus makes up 90 percent of outbreaks of diarrheal disease on cruise ships and can be spread through infected food or water, by passengers or crew who were infected while onshore or environmental contamination.

The virus can stay on surfaces for days or weeks and is resistant to many common disinfectants, theCDC says. People can spread it for two weeks after they show symptoms.

On cruise ships, it’s incredibly easily to spread norovirus.

“It’s just really the perfect scenario for transmission of highly contagious gastrointestinal pathogens,” Dr. Jose Lucar, an infectious disease physician and associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, toldAARP.

That’s why washing your hands is crucial.

“Hand sanitizer can help, but it does not replace soap and water,” Vikram Niranjan, an assistant professor at the University of Limerick, wrote inThe Conversation.

Legionnaires’ disease

Two passengers were diagnosed withLegionnaires’ diseasefollowing a Norwegian cruise last year, a Februaryletterto Norwegian Encore passengers showed.

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia that develops after exposure toLegionellabacteria.

Although most healthy people who come in contact with the bacteria do not get sick, the CDC saysone out of every 10 people sickened with Legionnaires’ disease will die from complications, including lung failure and death.

On cruise ships, legionnaires’ disease can spread through mist and inbaths, pools, hot tubs and showers.

There is no vaccine for Legionnaires’ disease. If diagnosed with the disease, you may need to go to the hospital where staff can provide antibiotics or administer oxygen through a face mask or a breathing machine.

Fortunately, the disease is not transmitted from person to person.

It’s unknown how the passengers were exposed toLegionella. Tests of water fixtures on the ship were negative.

Covid and flu

The world watched as people quarantined on cruise ships for months during the height of theCovid-19 pandemic. More than 800 people fell ill on the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan, including107 Americans.

That threat is not over, although Covid has since become endemic: staying in humans forever, much like influenza.

Covid spreads through exposure to infected droplets and surfaces.

“Indoor densely populated places where we’re exchanging exhaled breath with one another is still going to be a concern for me,” Dr. Wilbur Chen, an adult infectious disease physician, also told AARP.

Although caseloads have fallen since the pandemic, infections are still killing dozens of people in the U.S. each week, CDCdatashows.

So is flu- although infections have plummeted since the start of the year.

This past two flu seasons were the worst in decades, partially due to vaccine hesitancy, which saw aresurgenceduring the Covid pandemic.

Measles

Vaccine hesitancy has also helped fuel outbreaks of themeaslesagain across the U.S., threatening the country’s decades-long elimination status.

In unvaccinated patients, the highly-spreadable virus can lead to pneumonia, ear infections, fever, a red-colored rash andbrain swelling known as encephalitis.

Measles is less common on cruise ships, but it can linger for hours after an infected person leaves the room.

And the U.S. isn’t the only place seeing more cases.

South America and Canada lost their elimination status last November.

However, two doses of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine provide 97 percent protection against measles, according to the CDC.

“The best way to protect travelers (passengers and crew) from getting infected is by getting the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine,” theagency says.

Farage under pressure to tackle racist Reform candidates who ‘spew hate online’

Reform UKcandidates standing in this week’s local elections appear to have posted racist and Islamophobic views onsocial media, as well as support for far-right figures likeTommy Robinsonand Nick Griffin,The Independentcan reveal.

The Independent US

The revelations about candidates standing for the party in seats in south-east England add to concerns thatNigel Farageis failing to tackleextremismin his party despite his claims that Reform’s vetting system is the best in British politics.

It also follows a failure byReform to deal with candidates in the north of Englandexposed byThe Independent, who espoused racist, misogynist and homophobic views on social media.

With Reform expected to win more than 1,500 seats next week, there are concerns that their failure to vet candidates properly will mean extremists will win seats across England.

Matt Davis in a striped to the right of Nigel Farage posted views about Islam on X (formerly Twitter) (Reform)

Among the candidates accused of “spewing hate online” is Lynn Smith, the Reform UK candidate for Blackfen and Lamorbey ward who was previously a UKIP councillor in Bexley. She appears to have reposted a graphic containing a photo of a Muslim woman and the text “hates Jews, Christians, atheists, gays, dogs, bacon, wine, beer, your civilisation, your culture, your traditions, your country, and you. Complains aboutislamophobia”.

Then on X (formerly Twitter), she appears to have said: “Has the NHS become the new Islam, criticise at your own risk?”

Then again on X she appears to have said: “@GBNews I don’t think we should have the ‘word’ islamaphobia. Wherever I look abroad at Islamic countries as a woman I am fearful for them, and am fearful of the growth of Islam here.”

Ms Smith also appears to have posted a picture of herself using a scarf as a hijab on Facebook, stating: “Thinking of becoming a Muslim just as a reason to hide my pelican neck. Then again, I couldn’t give up alcohol.”

The Reform UK candidate seemingly expressed support forTommy Robinson, despite Mr Farage’s attempts to distance himself from the far right activist. Replying to a Nick Ferrari post about interviewing the friend of the Westminster terror attack suspect, she said: “I used to be against Tommy [Robinson]’s methods but when the MSM are too cowardly to dig deep into radical Islam he’s now a hero for sure.”

Meanwhile Mike Ferro, the Reform UK candidate for Blendon and Penhill ward, appears to have posted a Facebook message saying: “Am I the only person who thinks that Uran Nabiev has been harshly treated by the law”.

Nabiev was sentenced to 14 years for killing a man in a “grotesque” overreaction to a broken wing-mirror by driving into two people after one of them punched his car. One of the victims received a fatal head injury when he was dragged 9 metres along the pavement on Bickley Road, Erith.

Also on Facebook he seems to have commented on the Black Lives Matter protests, saying: “They are delighted - overjoyed - at the shocking manner of his death, and the platform it has given them to promote their odious beliefs. The irony is, these groups themselves are the new totalitarians, heirs to the Nazis…”

Old Bexley and Sidcup Tory MP Louie French described the comments by the three Reform candidates as “truly shocking.”

He added: “Reform selected three candidates who are spewing hate online and sharing wild conspiracy theories. I urge Reform UK to do the right thing and disown these candidates now.”

Meanwhile in Chingford another Reform candidate, Matt Davis, who has been pictured with Mr Farage, has posted numerous hate messages on a now deleted X account about Islam.

He appeared to refer to Islam as “an evil death cult” and “evil” in dozens of messages, as well as making other unpublishable comments.

Conservative chairman Kevin Hollinrake said: “Reform UK claimed they had professionalised and properly vetted their candidates. These comments show that simply isn’t true.

“Instead we’re seeing a pattern of offensive remarks, conspiracies, and poor judgment. These aren’t the high standards they promised; it’s the exact opposite.”

A Reform spokesman said: “We are looking into these posts.”
